NYC Mayor Discusses New Year's Eve Safety

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: All right. Right now, we've got some news coming out of New York. You are looking and listening to the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg.

MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, MAYOR OF NEW YORK: Police officers will not allow anyone in with alcoholic beverages, and they will check people's belongings to make absolutely sure that this prohibition is followed.
Street closings and parking restrictions are detailed to the press in the release that you're just getting. Just remember that this is New York. It's going to be a very crowded situation, so mass transit is the best ways to get there.
The forecast for tomorrow is, once again, for an absolutely spectacular evening. No rain, no snow in the forecast. Temperatures are going to be in the mid-30s. You're going to be there for a long period of time. I know it's exciting, but dress warmly. We don't want anybody to come down with a cold. This should be a great experience.
We announced last week the police department, police commissioner stepping up Operations Atlas in light of the recent increase in the nation's threat level. Sadly, terrorism is something that we have to live with in this world, and New York City has been living with this in our memory since 9/11.
Our police department has done a great job in keeping us safe, and we expect tomorrow night to be no different. Members of the police department's Hercules teams, officers assigned to the bomb squad and aviation unit and mounted police will all be on duty.
I want to urge everyone to leave the worrying to the professionals. That's what these security levels are for. They're for professionals. The rest of us -- let's go to Time's Square. It's going to be a fantastic night, a great beginning to a wonderful 2004. There will be close to a billion people estimated to be watching this around the world on television. So if you want to wave to a billion people, here's your chance to do so.
LIN: Mayor Michael Bloomberg, saying all things are a go for New Year's Eve in Times Square. They'll be safe. He'll be there with former Iraqi POW Shoshana Johnson to celebrate the incoming new year's.
