BRAD SMITH, ANCHOR, CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS: President Trump heads to Turkey today for a critical NATO Summit. What we can expect from the talks. Plus, a stunning reversal. FIFA suspended U.S. star Folarin Balogun's red card ban. How President Trump may have played a role in that decision. And --

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: One-eight -- mayday! The plane down on the water.

SMITH: A small plane made a hard landing into the East River in New York. What we're learning about the crash this morning. Plus --

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, my God! Oh my God, guys! We're having Taylor Swift dessert!

SMITH: We're getting a closer glimpse inside Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding. A look at who all may have been there. Plus, who caught her bouquet? Well, good morning, everyone, I'm Brad Smith, this is CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS. Glad that you're with us this morning. Let's get this started.

President Trump is set for a high-stakes NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey this week. He is due to take off tonight aboard Air Force One, arriving tomorrow at the Turkish capital. The Strait of Hormuz will be one of the biggest topics of the talks.

On the sidelines, the President is also expected to meet with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Now, the Trump administration has taken an increasingly hostile tone towards the NATO alliance. And it comes just days after the President had phone calls with

Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Earlier today, Kyiv came under deadly attack from Russia. At least, 11 people were killed and dozens more wounded in the latest exchange in the conflict.

Sure to be another major topic at the summit. And now, to images from Tehran today. Huge crowds have turned out for the third and largest day of public mourning for Iran's slain leader, Ali Khamenei. CNN's Paula Hancocks is in Abu Dhabi, and she's been following the latest developments there. Paula, what have we watched play out to this point?

PAULA HANCOCKS, CNN INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Well, Brad, what we're seeing on state media are significant crowds in the streets of Tehran, the capital. We are seeing this funeral procession, the commemoration, which is going to take about a 10-kilometer route or a six-mile route through the city.

But it is expected to take many hours. As you see, the vehicle carrying those coffins of the late supreme leader who was killed by a U.S.-Israeli airstrike at the beginning of the war on February 28th, alongside a number of his family members.

Now, the sheer number of people in the streets means that this vehicle will be moving very slowly. We have been seeing some anger among this crowd. We have been seeing flags being waved and also some banners saying "kill Trump".

Chants of "death to America, death to Israel!" There is anger that their supreme leader was killed by the strike on February 28th. Now, we are expecting this to be the biggest day. We are expecting the most significant numbers on the streets.

Iranian officials have been talking about millions of people being expected along this funeral procession. We're also seeing what the regime wants to show to America, to Israel and to the world. This sense of unity. We have seen the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, posting on social media saying that this is really showing the people and their unity, wanting to show that the regime has survived, wanting to show that it will be in charge going forward.

Of course, there are many in Iran who will not be part of this procession, who do not support this regime, and that is believed to be a majority at this point. Now, the one person we haven't seen is the current supreme leader, the son of the late supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.

He is believed to have been injured in that same strike that killed his father. We have not seen him at this point. In fact, we haven't seen or heard from him at all since he became the supreme leader. Any messages have been read out by state media anchors or a statement given. So that is something that we will definitely be watching out for. Brad?

[05:05:00] SMITH: Yes, certainly going to be interesting to see exactly how the

tense period right now, even amid this time of mourning plays into the next steps in negotiations as well. CNN's Paula Hancocks joining us live from Abu Dhabi. Thank you.

The man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk is due in court this week. Prosecutors are expected to use the multi- day hearing to preview some of their evidence against 23-year-old Tyler Robinson.

That includes a recorded statement from his former roommate. Investigators believe that could offer insight into an alleged confession by the suspect. This preliminary hearing will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

Now, if it does move forward, Robinson would then formally enter a plea. A stunning twist ahead of team USA's World Cup match against Belgium today. FIFA confirms it will now allow striker Folarin Balogun to play today.

Sources say that President Trump asked the head of FIFA to review the call after the 25-year-old received a red card during the team's win over Bosnia and Herzegovina last week. Balogun stepped on a defender's ankle, receiving a penalty that usually leads to a suspension in the following game as well.

Staying in sports, Naomi Osaka defeated top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time on Sunday. It was a match-up of two of the hardest-hitter on tour. Sabalenka had beaten Osaka in all three of her previous matches with Osaka this year, including at the same stage of the French Open last month.

Osaka says it's been a long time since she had this much fun on the court, and the win means a lot for her. Well, speaking of a big win, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have officially entered their married era. They got married with a massive celebration in Madison Square Garden.

It was expected to host 1,000 guests. A billboard outside the garden helped spread the joyous news, with a message reading, "just married". A photo released by Rob and Joann Jordan shows the first look inside the wedding, featuring the couple on a red-carpet staircase appearing to be the entrance to the wedding.

Joann Jordan says that their phones were taken when they reached the top of the staircase for check in. And Ana Demmer; the fiance of Kansas City Chiefs player Creed Humphrey posted a photo of a handkerchief appearing to be from the wedding, embroidered with a T and T, the date, New York City and the blank space, lyric.

So, it's going to be forever. During CNN's independence eve live, comedian Cheri Oteri jokingly told Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, she got a black eye at the wedding.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Oh, wow --

(CROSSTALK)

CHERI OTERI, COMEDIAN: Oh, my God --

OTERI: Oh my God, funny point --

COHEN: What?!

COOPER: Is that from the wedding?

(LAUGHTER)

COHEN: Oh, George Clooney!

OTERI: Yes --

COHEN: My God --

OTERI: And Arnold(ph) --

COOPER: You have a black eye --

COHEN: Wise --

OTERI: And all of a sudden, I hear, shake it -- shake it off comes off.

(LAUGHTER)

OTERI: So, I'll be lying --

COHEN: OK --

OTERI: I'd be lying to the fans --

COHEN: You wanted to dance, you wanted to dance -- OTERI: I wanted to dance.

COHEN: Yes --

OTERI: So, I'm doing the "worm like a lady" --

(LAUGHTER)

OTERI: And all of a sudden, my shoe flies off and hits the back of a Hymen(ph) sister.

COHEN: No!

OTERI: Yes, and so, she comes over --

COHEN: Now, the Hymen(ph) sister?

OTERI: Yes, and so --

COHEN: Yes, so --

OTERI: And so, comes over a Hymenph) sister, and so she comes over, all natural, beautiful and everything, and she's like excuse me, Shelly, right?

(LAUGHTER)

OTERI: Listen, who are you here with, the bride or the groom? And then I go, I'm here with -- how about Tay-Tay? And then she says, well, Tay-Tay, Taylor never mentioned you to us. How do you know her? And I go, how do I know her? How about Tay-Tay and me and Tay-Tay second cousin, Trina(ph_ -- pa-pao(ph).

(LAUGHTER)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SMITH: Ashley Smith, the sister of Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith, says she caught Taylor Swift's bouquet during the wedding celebration. Smith shared photos of herself holding the bouquet after the event. Congrats.

Lots more to come on CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS. What caused small fires to pop up on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend? Plus, this image going viral of a black woman on a Washington D.C. subway on the 4th of July, surrounded by members of a white nationalist group.

We've got the full story there. Plus, take a look at this. A small plane just misses colliding with another aircraft, then has to land in New York's East River. Details later in the hour. Stay with us. You're watching CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

[05:10:00] SMITH: The 4th of July is a time for celebration across the United

States. But studies show that this patriotic holiday historically sees larger amounts of gun violence. Sadly, officials say that this past weekend was no exception. CNN's Amy Kiley reports with more.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

AMY KILEY, CNN REPORTER (voice-over): Independence Day weekend is resulting in heartbreak for some U.S. communities. At least, one woman is dead and eight other people are injured after a shooting in Fort Wayne, Indiana, yesterday. It's unclear what started the violence. New York police say after Saturday's fireworks --

JESSICA TISCH, POLICE COMMISSIONER, NEW YORK CITY: The family barbecue was taking place in the courtyard when an unknown male fired multiple rounds into the courtyard.

[05:15:00]

GLORIA PAZMINO, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Injured, eight people, half of them children, the youngest victim, just six years old, was shot in the abdomen.

KILEY: Officials in Pensacola, Florida, say a teen takeover event ended with a shooting that left a 19-year-old man dead and at least six others wounded. Police say the youngest victim is 16.

ERIC WINSTROM, CHIEF OF POLICE, PENSACOLA, FLORIDA: And we saw numerous people on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began providing first aid.

KILEY: Phoenix area officials report a shooting at an entertainment spot sent five minors to the hospital Saturday, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into a man's death in Memphis.

Officials say National Guard members were helping police chase him yesterday when he allegedly turned a handgun on them. They say the troops then shot the man and killed him. I'm Amy Kiley, reporting.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

SMITH: All right, thank you, Amy. Also, over the weekend, a crowd of masked members of a white nationalist group marched in D.C., with some of them carrying confederate flags. The group is called Patriot Front, and you may have seen some of the photos.

Many of them had their faces covered and wore sunglasses. They were chanting "reclaim America". There's also this photo taken by "Reuters" that is going viral. It shows an African-American woman sitting on the subway surrounded by members of the group.

CNN's Dana Bash asked Interior Secretary Doug Burgum about all of this. And here's part of what he had to say.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) DOUG BURGUM, SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, UNITED STATES: And part of my

response to that is that there are protests on the mall that people say things that I think are reprehensible about President Trump, and yet they're allowed to go on because of free speech in our country.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SMITH: Patriot Front is considered one of the most active white nationalist groups in the U.S. In New York, firefighters had to put out several small fires on the 4th of July. Video shows flames popping up on the Brooklyn Bridge as the Macy's fireworks show was winding down Saturday night.

Officials say fires like these can happen during big fireworks shows and displays. However, NYPD declined to confirm if they were directly tied to the fireworks. The good news is that no one was hurt. And speaking of fireworks, a frightening moment in the skies over Chicago during the 4th of July celebrations.

A Delta flight from Atlanta appears to have been struck by fireworks while landing at Midway airport. CNN's Rafael Romo has more on this.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RAFAEL ROMO, CNN CORRESPONDENT (on camera): These incidents remind us of how dangerous fireworks can be when mishandled or used near airports or other public infrastructure. Delta Airlines confirmed to CNN in a statement that one of their flights that originated here in Atlanta was hit by a firework while landing at Chicago Midway International Airport on Saturday.

Right after the impact, the pilot on Delta Flight 1076 is heard saying to an air traffic controller, the crew heard the bang on the plane when the plane was flying at 200 feet according to audio from atc.com.

Here's part of the communication between the pilot and the control tower as the flight was landing at Chicago's Midway Airport.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Delta 1076, I'm not sure if you'll be able to assess any -- if there's any damage at this time, but can you tell me if you had to -- I guess any further information about the fireworks?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, negative, but yes, but 200 feet AGL, 2-250 AGL, but we just heard the bang on the plane. So, we'll have to take a look at it once we get to the gate.

ROMO: The air traffic controller said there had been multiple similar reports, and that city officials have been notified. CNN has reached out to Chicago police for details.

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that Delta Airlines flight 1076 landed safely at Chicago Midway International Airport around 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, July 4th after the pilot reported that a fireworks mortar struck the aircraft just before landing, adding that the FAA will investigate the incident. Delta said the plane landed without incident and is being inspected.

SMITH: Still to come on CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS, a teen had to be rescued from the base of this canyon. How he ended up there in the first place. And the beehive is buzzing this morning after Beyonce drops a surprise new single. Details on that and much more coming up on CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

[05:20:00]

SMITH: We may finally be getting some relief from the scorching heat that's been melting big swaths of the country. Here's CNN's Allison Chinchar with the forecast.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ALLISON CHINCHAR, METEOROLOGIST (on camera): Finally, some relief from the heat for a few areas. It is beginning in portions of the Midwest. Chicago, for example, high temperature today, around 79 degrees. Their average is 84. But this brief cool off is going to be brief.

Temperatures start to rise back up again by the time we get to the middle of the upcoming week. Same thing for St. Louis, whereas Washington D.C. and New York will be able to see the temperatures cooling down at least through the middle of the week before rebounding by the time we get to Thursday and Friday.

Now, the heat is still continuing to fuel a lot of showers and thunderstorms throughout the area. You can see through the morning hours, still have some leftover showers across areas of New York, Philadelphia and Boston, as well as portions of the southeast.

More of those will fire up near the Gulf Coast as we head through the remainder of the day, Monday, and especially into the evening hours from states from Louisiana all the way over through Virginia.

[05:25:00]

Now, where the heat is really going to ramp back up, that's going to be out into the desert southwest. You've got alerts in place already across portions of California as well as Arizona. Here's a look at Las Vegas, their average high is 104.

They were pretty close to normal over the weekend, but now we're going to start to see those temperatures rise, getting back up to around 111 by the middle of the week. Phoenix, very similar average high of 107, they'll be well above that for the next several days.

And then finally, by the end of next weekend, we will start to see those temperatures coming back down.

(END VIDEOTAPE) SMITH: All right, Allison Chinchar, thank you for that. Straight

ahead on CNN HEADLINE EXPRESS, mixed reaction to a red card reversal in the World Cup. One of team USA star players will be allowed to play today despite the earlier ruling by the referees on the pitch.

Did President Trump have something to do with it? It's the big question. And the drama surrounding the upgrade of the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial goes on. And now, the fix has a whopping multi-million-dollar price tag with taxpayers footing the bill.
