KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, this Labor Day weekend is marred by another shark attack, this time deadly. Ten-year-old David Peltier died this morning at a hospital in Virginia Beach where he had been visiting his father. The attack happened last night around 6:00 p.m. while the boy was swimming with his father. Witnesses describe the horror of the scene to Kay Young of our affiliate WAVY.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A bunch of screams. Kids were screaming like bloody murder.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: At the beginning, we were looking at a little guy standing on the boards and a dad pulling him out. We thought that they were just playing.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Except the screaming went on too long.
KAY YOUNG, WAVY CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A young boy who had been surfing with his family was suddenly in a world of trouble. His father was in the water with him and did all he could to help.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He was trying to fight the shark away from the kid.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I mean, you could actually see him fighting off the shark and sort of pushing the shark away and pulling the kid.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And there was darker water than normally. Then we realized it was blood in the water.
YOUNG: Once the child was on shore, witnesses say his wounds were confirmation enough that a shark had attacked him.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And there were shark bites all along his leg and it also looked like maybe part of the shark actually got him right inside the thigh. He lost a lot of blood. He had two brothers who also had their surfboards and they just were standing on the beach crying hysterically.
YOUNG: Virginia Beach officials cleared the water, but everyone who saw the hurt little boy had already made the decision that there would be no more swimming, at least for this weekend.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don't think that it's going to happen up north, like here, so it is bothering me a little bit.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You know, maybe lightening doesn't strike twice in the same spot but, you know, why risk it.
