MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: Taliban targets remain under very heavy attack by allied jets today and there are reports of civilian casualties.

To get the latest now, live via videophone, from CNN's Kamal Hyder in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

KAMAL HYDER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Martin, the Taliban sources in Kandahar told us today that there was indeed a high loss of life in Kabul, and they also added by saying that the fact that these bombs are even falling on opposition-controlled areas shows that the accuracy of the bombing is definitely not what the allies are saying -- Martin.

SAVIDGE: What is the situation currently in Kandahar tonight? It was heavy attacks earlier, is it quiet?

HYDER: Kandahar was very intense with air activity today. There were several sorties starting as early as 11:30 in the morning here, Afghan Standard Time. It is now, obviously -- it is nightfall here, 7:30 in the evening, and the people of Kandahar are bracing for a possible night of bombing. These fighters were flying very low over Kandahar today, much lower than they ever have been before. We are also told by our sources in Jalalabad that the aircrafts on Jalalabad were quite intense yesterday and that the air activity over Jalalabad also quite intense.

Judging from the level of activity, obviously, the bombing runs were not substantial. There were few explosions in the morning in the Kandahar area. One explosion in the evening again in the distant -- in the distance towards the West and towards the airport. It has been quiet since -- Martin.

SAVIDGE: And Kamal, are they attacking the targets in the city limits or is this on the outskirts of Kandahar?

HYDER: Well, the complex situation is charged -- I mean the situation is so complex here that the civilian areas are intermingling with military areas. Some of the military areas dangerously close to civilian populations and the Kole Urdu (ph) as the corps commander's headquarter was concerned was smack in the middle of the city.

So obviously, there is a risk then to civilian population as well -- Martin. SAVIDGE: Kamal Hyder reporting to us from Kandahar this evening. Thank you very much. We'll remain in touch.
