FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: We've got some breaking news out of the Middle East. We're now going to join Mike Hanna, who is on the phone now from Jerusalem -- Mike.
MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF: Well, Fredricka, ongoing violence in the region. In the latest incident, in what has been a bloody weekend, two Palestinians have been killed. They were, according to Israeli police, in a car approaching an Israeli Army Base near the Israeli town of Hadera (ph).
They were stopped by police. One of them got out of the car and opened fire. He was shot and killed by police at the scene. The other Palestinian in the car then drove away, and after a short distance, according to eyewitnesses, the car exploded, and he died.
It's not clear at this point whether he was carrying explosives on his body or there were explosives in the car. The Israeli authorities are characterizing it as a foiled attempt, attack on a military base, an Israeli military base. This follows ongoing violence in the region.
Early on today, Israel struck at several targets in Palestinian territories, in particular, in the West Bank city of Nablis. This, in turn, followed an overnight suicide bomb attack in the West Bank on an Israeli settlement in which two Israeli teenagers were killed by a suicide bomber. So on things spiral to violence, little sign whatsoever of at what stage it will end. Fredricka.
WHITFIELD: All right, thanks very much for that update from Mike Hanna in Jerusalem.
