Second Day of Protests Getting Underway in Washington

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A second day of protest is getting underway in Washington this morning. Anti-globalization forces are in town to protest the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. CNN's Kathleen Koch has reports that a variety of diverse causes are represented in the streets of this capitol this weekend.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KATHLEEN KOCH, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): There was a chorus of intense angry voices, some against globalization.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I know some of the things that the World Bank has done to these small countries and everything, which has caused a lot of problems and violence and all. And so, I'm supporting that.

KOCH: Others against the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, I absolutely against the war. I'm absolutely against war period, whether it's this war or any war.

BRIAN WORLEY, PROTESTER: We support the troops too. We say bring them home, you know. They don't need to be out there being killed.

KOCH: Many appalled by the continuing violence in Israel and the occupied territories.

JACOB HODES, PROTESTER: (Inaudible) saying the values of Judaism does not support what Ariel Sharon is doing.

AMEAAH IBRAHIM, PROTESTER: Obviously (inaudible) Islam and nobody will say it's right for people, to (inaudible). But you can't give collective punishment to a whole nation.

KOCH: There were a few minor confrontations. Police had to remove anti-war protesters, who disrupted a rally backing U.S. policies, but crowds remained manageable, and unlike past years. Officers made not a single arrest. CHIEF CHARLES RAMSEY, WASHINGTON METROPOLITCAN POLICE DEPARTMENT: Last year, year before, the year of 2000, there was a lot more destruction and people who really were bent on trying to cause us problems. It seems to be toned down considerably from 2000.

KOCH: While the goal of a peaceful protest was met, demonstrators themselves were worried that their causes were so diverse that no cohesive message would emerge.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I am concerned but I would want the public to know that we're united around the concept of peace with justice.

KOCH: A concept easier imagined than achieved. Kathleen Koch, CNN, Washington.
