Kidnapper Was Wearing Tan Golf Cap

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Police in Salt Lake City, Utah, showed the public what they say is an important clue in the search for 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart. CNN's James Hattori has the latest on that and more now live from Salt Lake City -- hi, James.

JAMES HATTORI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Kyra.

You know, from the beginning, police officials have said that the kidnapping suspect was wearing a white cap of some sort the morning of June 5 when the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart occurred.

Now they've refined that description a bit. They're saying it was more of a golf cap, tan in color.

DET. DWAYNE BAIRD, SALT LAKE CITY POLICE: This hat is identical to that worn by the kidnapper in the case of Elizabeth Smart. It is this style and this color. So it's -- a golf-type cap, tan in color. This information was developed by our detectives, as I said, this afternoon.

HATTORI: While investigators continue to sift through leads and evidence, the volunteer search effort is now shifting to the neighborhood level as we have been reporting.

Elizabeth Smart's family is asking local city officials and community groups to organize efforts to canvas their own neighborhoods. There will no longer be a centralized volunteer search effort, an effort that has drawn thousands of people over the past week and a half.

Police are still looking are for Bret Michael Edmunds, the 26- year-old transient who was seen in Elizabeth Smart's neighborhood driving suspiciously a couple of days before her disappearance. And the family is also culling for today, Father's Day, Kyra, to be a day of prayer, of course, in hopes that Elizabeth Smart will soon be found -- Kyra.
