CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: As we told you at the top of the hour, three people, including a Palestinian gunman are now dead, after a shooting in Jerusalem, and CNN's John Vause is joining us now by telephone from there.
John, we understand this involved some border police, Israeli police.
JOHN VAUSE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Catherine, it looks like what happened is -- it all happened down there, the Damascus gates, in the old city of Jerusalem, which up until now, I guess, had been considered relatively safe, at least by Israeli standards.
Around noon, local time, police tell us a 19-year-old Palestinian man opened fire on an Israeli phone company truck, as it was driving by. The driver of that truck, we're told, was wounded, but the security guard sitting in the passenger seat next to the driver was killed. He was shot, two, maybe three times.
Now as the gunman fled, he fled to a nearby cafe. The border police then opened fire. There as an exchange of fire. At least 14 people were hurt in that crossfire, and then a third person was killed alongside the Palestinian gunman, this third person was actually inside the cafe at the time. He was an Israeli Arabs.
So, the total killed from that particular shooting, three people, at least 14 people were hurt -- Catherine.
CALLAWAY: John, tell more about exactly when this happened and what goes on at that time of day. Was it a busy time?
VAUSE: Yes, it's busy, it's a, you know, the start of the working week here -- it's the old part of town. Normally, if this intifada wasn't happening, it would be very busy with tourists.
Still, it is a relatively busy part of the city. There are a lot of shops open around there, a lot of (UNINTELLIGIBLE) on the street. There are still some tourists in the area; there were people from overseas, and Americans on the scene as well, from -- other foreigners as well.
We saw that they basically took cover when the bullets started flying, and the reports that we were getting, is that this is all over very quickly. It lasted no more than a few minutes, but there was a lot of bullets flying, at least 14 people hurt in the exchange of fire. But yes, a very busy part of the city -- a very crowded part of the city as well.
CALLAWAY: All right, thank you. That's CNN's John Vause. Thanks, John.
