FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: In Britain everywhere, it is front page news. It's a very special day for the British monarchy as Prince Harry celebrates the big 18. Now that he's all grown up, he's sending out a message about life in the limelight. Tom Bradbey (ph) has his story.

TOM BRADBEY, ITN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Prince Harry turns 18 today, and he does so with a clear message. He wants to make sure his mother's legacy is not obscured. Princess Diana was president of the Great Oman Street (ph) hospital, and his visit here was the most poignant part of a day designed to continue her work.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles were joint patrons of the Wishing Well Appeal that raised 54 million pounds for a new building at the hospital. Princess Diana went on to become its president. Since her death, the post has not been filled. At the end of the day, the hospital gave Prince Harry a small memento of all the work his mother did here.

The day began with a visit to the drop-in center. The Kids Company tries to help vulnerable children by offering them a supportive environment. Next, a demonstration by Merlin, a charity dealing in crisis health care. By now, he was visibly relaxing into his new role.

Then experienced how cozy and warm it can get for a whole family inside a mosquito net inside a disaster zone.

By now, Harry was getting used to being waylaid.

Next, West Ham (ph) and a project that aims to use the (UNINTELLIGIBLE) to direct children who've had problems in school back into education. Harry accepted the offer to step up to the penalty spot. It went so well, he did it again.

He took his turn in goal.

PRINCE HARRY: How could I reach that? That was a nice one.

BRADBEY: He persuaded the others to fire at us.

To some extent, this whole exercise aimed to portray a different side to Harry, but the message he wanted to get across did center around his mother. He's been greatly upset by the endless revelations about her private life. "She had more guts than anyone," he told us when the day was over.
