MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: The Monterey Jazz Festival wraps up its 45th annual celebration today.
CNN'S Ann McDermott introduces us to a group of musicians who have the honor of playing at the event, which began decades before they were even born.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ANN MCDERMOTT, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): These are not exactly jazz man, but they're jazz boys and jazz girls. But they can play.
This is the Monterey Jazz Festival's High School All Star Band, a 32-year old tradition featuring talented teenagers from all over the country. Kids like Dominic Thoreaux, who plays bass at L.A.'s Hamilton High.
DOMINIC THOREAUX, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT: This what I started on.
MCDERMOTT: Ever since, he's been practicing hours each day, no matter what the family dog thinks.
THOREAUX: She usually goes away and hides.
MCDERMOTT: When he sings, too.
But others appreciate the all stars. The Monterey Jazz Folks, for one. They send the band on tour to Japan each year. It was a fun trip. They really got into it. Some, more than others.
But it's music that really moves them. What kind of music do you like personally, your favorite?
His mother says it's classical.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hi, mom.
MCDERMOTT: Why did he pick up an instrument? Because his brother did.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: His teacher gave him trophies for practicing. I wanted a trophy, too.
MCDERMOTT: And you, did you choose the guitar because it's a babe magnet? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hasn't worked for me yet.
MCDERMOTT: They sound professional. And most want to become professionals. And some are already writing that first song for the greatest hits album. Me? I was just happy listening.
They love this, though they can't always explain why.
THOREAUX: You know, I just do what I do basically it's what I do.
MCDERMOTT: So do it.
Ann McDermott, CNN, Los Angeles.
