HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: We have editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich. He's here to show us what he's worked out for us. Also a Pulitzer Prize Award winner.
MIKE LUCKOVICH, EDITORIAL CARTOONIST, "ATLANTA JOURNAL- CONSTITUTION": Thank you for mentioning that.
COLLINS: We haven't said that at all today.
LUCKOVICH: Yes, pretty good.
COLLINS: For "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution," of course. And I want to talk a little bit, if we could, before we reveal what you've come up with today about some of the other cartoons that you've done recently. And today is in "The New York Times."
LUCKOVICH: Right. You know, this cartoon was like the only issue of last week that was sort of fun and light. Everything else was Iraq. And so it was the -- it's the Dole/Clinton debate on "60 Minutes," and that's coming up tonight. So I do both of them. I've got Clinton, he's sitting in his underwear and he's saying, "while they're law making, we're home eating leftovers." And Dole says, "Tell it, brother. Hamburger helper every night." And the producer, "60 Minutes" producer is saying, "it's supposed to be a debate."
COLLINS: Do you think they have become chummy?
LUCKOVICH: I think they -- I don't think they hang around a lot together, but...
ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: "Saturday Night Live" had a very funny thing on that last night.
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: So what else -- that's in today's "New York Times?"
COLLINS: Right.
LUCKOVICH: That's in today's "New York Times," right, and my newspaper, "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution," there as well.
And now, the next cartoon, I did this a couple of weeks ago, and it's on trying to get countries signed up for the war. And so I've got Bush is talking to Donald Rumsfeld and he's saying, "we need a longer list of countries that back war, so you're now officially the Republic of Don. Say hi to Cheneystan."
Now, Rumsfeld had an aide call me and ask for the cartoon. And so that was kind of fun. The person I'm supposed to send it to is a person named Major Player, if you can believe that, Major Player. What's the next level up from Major? He's probably hoping to get up to that level so people can quit teasing him.
COOPER: So he'll be a General Player.
LUCKOVICH: I signed this cartoon to the Republic of Don.
(CROSSTALK)
COOPER: So what's one you've drawn?
LUCKOVICH: Now, Iraq, this is such a tough issue, because that's all I've been doing lately. And so this is the one I came up with today. I've got Bush at his press conference, and a reporter is saying, "Mr. President, if you haven't made the final decision to occupy it and invade it, how come you keep calling it my-Raq"? Not Iraq, my-Raq.
COOPER: I get it. And you did that in 40 minutes. I mean, that's a lot of pressure.
LUCKOVICH: It is. And my leg went to sleep.
COLLINS: He could hardly get up here.
LUCKOVICH: Yes, I know, I had to hop over here. So it's a tough, tough deal.
COOPER: How long does it usually take you to do a cartoon?
LUCKOVICH: Well, since my editor may be watching, it takes me a good eight or nine hours, each day.
COOPER: I won't press you on that. Mike Luckovich, appreciate you joining us. It was fun.
LUCKOVICH: Thank you very much.
