China Reports 160 New Cases of SARS

ROBIN MEADE, CNN ANCHOR: Officials in China say more than 160 new cases have been reported and seven more deaths. For the latest from Beijing, let's check in by phone with CNN's Lisa Rose Weaver. Good morning.
LISA ROSE WEAVER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Robin. Yes. The latest figures from China's health ministry, 163 new cases, new infections, 69 of those in Beijing, bringing, today, seven new deaths. Now, China's total number of infections from the beginning of this disease has broken the 4,000 marks at more than 4100 people. Taking into consideration that the world total is only 6200 people, a little bit more, the pattern is clearly set that China is really the $64,000 question here, is it under control or is it going to increase in the days ahead?
Beijing is certainly still ground zero here. There are official hopes that cases will taper off in the next ten days, if it does, the illness will have peaked, but it is far too early at this point to call. There are indications that SARS is spreading in northern China, in Shanxi Province as well Inner Mongolia, both north of the Chinese capital.
The mood, Robin, in Beijing, is -- continues to be rather tense. People stay at home as much as possible, of course, a lot of public places like Karaoke bars and movie theaters have been closed, there aren't that many places for people to go. However, it doesn't stop them entirely. I've noticed in the last couple of days more traffic despite the bad SARS news, more people getting out and about and going to parks. About half the people I see on the streets are wearing their protective surgical masks to protect themselves. They're eating out less, eating in a lot more. DVD sales have gone up a lot, as you can imagine, people just want to sort of want to stay at home and try to prevent from being infected.
Meanwhile, more than 15,000 people in Beijing are under quarantine. This is going on at a variety of locations they include six residential buildings as well as several buildings at one particular university, Jiao Tong University. Authorities at that there want to prevent the infection from spreading among most of the people in the people in these quarantined areas who are simply suspected of having been in contact with SARS patients with only a relative few cases of actual SARS sufferers being reported there -- Robin.
