KRIS OSBORN, CNN ANCHOR: Welcome back. Time now for our "Quick Draw" segment.
KELLI ARENA, CNN ANCHOR: That means it's time to say hello to our Mike Luckovich. He's a Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist for the "Atlanta Journal Constitution."

MIKE LUCKOVICH, EDITORIAL CARTOONIST, "ATLANTA JOURNAL CONSTITUTION": Hey. Hi.

ARENA: Good morning, Mike. How are you?

OSBORN: Hi.

LUCKOVICH: Very good. I haven't quite got my caption written, so...

ARENA: Ah! So, we'll have to banter. We'll banter while you do...

LUCKOVICH: No. But you know I can -- I can do this. It will just take me a second. But I think -- don't we have a couple of cartoons that we're going show beforehand?

ARENA: Yes we do. Some highlights of the...

LUCKOVICH: And then I will professionally describe these and draw my captioning. And no one will even notice.

ARENA: You can do both at the same time.

LUCKOVICH: I can do both at the same time.

ARENA: Amazing.

LUCKOVICH: Now, this first cartoon, this was last week. And what I did, I sometimes like to combine issues together. And so Harry Potter was coming out, so was "The Hulk," so I did this cartoon. The woman is saying something like, you know, you're usually used to being violent and throwing stuff, what are you doing? And he said, I'm reading right now. So...

ARENA: Him and a lot of other people.

LUCKOVICH: Yes, right. And then the next cartoon -- what's the next cartoon we did? Oh, OK. Now, this is a two-panel cartoon. As you can see on the left-hand side, I drew a skinny starving dog labeled "Homeland Security" and Bush saying oh my gosh, that reminds me. And then in the second panel, you see he's giving more tax cuts to a big rich fat cat. And I -- you know, I think there's better places that we can be putting that money than in the pockets of rich people. So, that's just my personal opinion.

But anyways, I have got my cartoons here now.

ARENA: One of the Supreme Court.

LUCKOVICH: Yes. And you know what...

ARENA: Major week for the Supreme Court.

LUCKOVICH: You know the reason I didn't get the caption quite done is because I actually did two cartoons. And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to show you...

ARENA: Bonus for us.

LUCKOVICH: Yes, it's a little -- it's a bonus cartoon. I hate to make fun of Clarence Thomas, but he's -- he figures in both of these cartoons. I drew him -- this is dealing with affirmative action. You see he's on a big affirmative action ladder. And he's yelling down, he says, "I said put me down as anti-ladder." I guess he was against the affirmative action case.

Now, this one I'm just going to have to read the caption, as I would have written it. This deals with the gay -- the striking down of the...

ARENA: Sodomy law.

LUCKOVICH: ... the sodomy law. And I think the next step may be marriage. I mean, if two like-minded people want to share the responsibilities and the rights of marriage, I think they should be able to. So I have entitled this the newest surprise from the Supreme Court. And Scalia is saying, attention people, Clarence and I have an announcement. And you see that they've got the hearts.

ARENA: Oh my goodness. I'm not sure Justice Scalia will appreciate that.

LUCKOVICH: Well, I don't know. But it just hit me and so I thought, well, I'm going to do this cartoon. So...

ARENA: He was very vocal in his dissent to that opinion.

LUCKOVICH: Right.

ARENA: Read it from the bench.

LUCKOVICH: Exactly. Oh, I know as was...

ARENA: Rare moment for him.

LUCKOVICH: As was Thomas. So...

OSBORN: Well, and it's fascinating in light of 1986. A lot of people saying this decision about same sex, et cetera, and the ban on sodomy laws is really revolutionary, in terms of what it means as a stamp culturally. Something that you...

LUCKOVICH: Well, I actually did a cartoon this week for my newspaper, the "Atlanta Journal Constitution." And I have got a reporter, he's saying you've ended this gay sex ban and you've affirmed affirmative action. Where are you going now? And I have him in a VW bus. We're going to a Grateful Dead concert, dude. So, you know just -- they're kind of a -- sort of a liberal thing that they done with these two cases. It's interesting.

OSBORN: You going to draw that one, too? That's going to be good.

LUCKOVICH: You know, I actually did it.

ARENA: He did this week. He was telling us...

OSBORN: Oh. OK. OK.

LUCKOVICH: Yes. So it's been a great -- normally during the summer it's sort of a slow news time.

ARENA: You know, usually. But the last few summers have not been slow, so you could be very busy.

LUCKOVICH: I know it. I know it. It's been great.

ARENA: I have been. So -- and I keep looking for that break. It just doesn't come.

LUCKOVICH: Dang it. I know it. Well, I love just having the topics to focus on. So it's just good.

ARENA: Well, we envoy having you. Thank you so much.

LUCKOVICH: Well, thank you Kelli, Kris. Appreciate it.

OSBORN: Very creative. Like "The Hulk."

LUCKOVICH: All right.

OSBORN: When I grew up on Lou Ferrigno. So I liked the TV show. You know he seemed like a real person more than a comic book.

LUCKOVICH: I know it.

OSBORN: Just my own childhood bias, perhaps but...

LUCKOVICH: I like Lou as well.

OSBORN: He's reading Harry Potter. Great stuff.
