FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Here at home, there is a mystery baby in Maryland. Nurses have nicknamed the girl Baby Liberty this Fourth of July weekend. She was found abandoned and is now in stable condition at a hospital in suburban Washington. Gary Nuremberg (ph) of WUSA has her story.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Liberty because she was born on the fourth of July; Libby for short. Six pounds, six ounces, she's already breaking hearts.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: One of the officers that was involved in rescuing the baby yesterday was totally captivated by her. He said, your heart would go out. She was alert. Her eyes were opening and she was a beautiful little girl. So we hope that there is someone out there that can give us more information so that this little girl is ensured a good future.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You can see the stress on officers' faces. Libby was found abandoned in the bushes off the 7800 block of Brink Road at about 6:15 last night, discovered by construction workers, who found her covered in ticks.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's obvious that the mother was in dire circumstances to abandon a baby in such a situation. And we do want the public to know that there are support services for mothers who may feel that they have nowhere to turn.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Janice Goldwater founded Adoptions Together in 1990, and it's placed 2,000 children since. She says, there's always somewhere for a scared mom to turn.
JANICE GOLDWATER, FOUNDER, ADOPTIONS TOGETHER: There is no such thing as an unwanted child. There is resources available for any woman or man who's in distress and doesn't believe they can care for their child themselves. Had this parent of this child picked up the phone and called Adoptions Together, or any number of other child- serving organizations, we would have been right there to help her.
