FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Tropical storm Claudette has been losing steam since it first made landfall in the Yucatan peninsula. But it could, possibly, regain some strength as it sits in the warm waters of the Gulf. It's heading towards Texas, and a hurricane watch has been issued from the Texas coast, from Port O'Connor to Brownsville. Claudette is the third tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane system.
An update on Miss Claudette, from Rob Marciano at the CNN weather center.
ROB MARCIANO, CNN METEOROLOGIST: Hi, Fred. You mentioned it could pick up steam. It's starting to do that, so we're watching it more closely now.
Let's get to it. The center of this thing is about 315 miles to the east of Brownsville, Texas, and it'll be heading towards that general area over the next 24 to 48 hours. Here it is right here, you see the flare-up of thunderstorms, mostly north and east of the system, heading into Florida. But this, the center is heading just north of Brownsville, most likely be there early Tuesday morning, so we'll watch this thing.
60 mile an hour winds now; it has to get to 74 to make it a hurricane. Probably won't do that. At least that's the official forecast. Good morning, Seattle. You'll probably see a couple rain showers. It will be dry and warm in Salt Lake. The other hot spot for storms, parts of Oklahoma. And parts of southern Missouri where there were reports of hail and gusty wins earlier today.
Daytime highs, across the west, I mentioned the heat, 97 in Salt Lake. 111 in Phoenix. Meanwhile, beautiful weather for Chicago, great weekend it is or was. 84 in New York City, and it'll be 90 in New Orleans.
60 mile an hour winds for tropical storm Claudette. We'll continue to watch her for the next couple of days. Back to you.
WHITFIELD: All right. Thanks very much, Rob.
