SEAN CALLEBS, CNN ANCHOR: There are those who say every day is kid's day but today it is the official day.
Parents are meant to be spending meaningful time with their children.

Dr. Lewis Lipsitt is a child development specialist and he now joins us from Providence, Rhode Island. Thanks very much.

Doctor, first tell us what is National Kid's Day.

DR. LEWIS LIPSITT, CHILD DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST: Well, thank you, it's a pleasure to be here on behalf of Kids Peace and the Boy's and Girl's Clubs of America, which are the sponsors of the National Kid's Day.

It's a day that will come up every year from now on. After all, there have been Mother's Day and Father's Day and other days for a long time, and now there is a National Kids Day, and this will occur as the first -- on the first Sunday of every August.

CALLEBS: We have a little checklist where we can walk down through, and hopefully you can see this from where you are.

Things to do. Check meaningful time spent together. Help intellectual development, eat meals together. All this stuff sounds so simple but it's very important, isn't it? Communicate, kick into activity.

LIPSITT: Yes, it's very important. As a matter of fact, what we've found through a questionnaire that was sponsored by Kids Peace and the Boy's and Girl's Clubs of America -- a study of 1,000 parents of individuals 18 and under is that the mealtime is an extremely important time in the view of many, many parents. 90 percent of the parents said that they deemed it very important to have meals with their children.

Yet, only 25 percent said that they have meals with their children as long or as many as one time a week. One time a week.

CALLEBS: Dr. Lipsitt, it sounds like it's called National Kid's Day. but it sounds like every -- this is a day parents should really focus on the fact, you know, there are some young lives out there; I'm responsible for bringing this child up. It's time for me to get more involved in his or her life. LIPSITT: Well, it is time for parents to get more and more involved, but I must say parents do a pretty good job of being involved in the lives of their kids, but what we found out through this questionnaire study is that there is a big disparity between what parents would like to do and what they would like for their children and what on the other hand they are able to do because frequently both parents are working and life is tough in many respects nowadays.

CALLEBS: OK, we thank you very much for joining us. You now see some of the technical problems with TV up close and personal but we appreciate you hanging around and getting on with us. Thanks very much.

LIPSITT: Thank you very much.
