MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: In Virginia, a retired man and his dog have been reunited after a thousand-mile separation. Chris Saba (ph) of our Houston affiliate KHWB has the story.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE, KHWB (voice-over): It's a story about a man and his best friend. One looks at his watch in anticipation, the other stares out a window with excitement. Both share a smile that comes with a reunion.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The only reason I retired was so that I could have more time to spend with Skipper.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: See, Skipper and Donny Dennis live 1,100 miles away from Houston in Stafford, Virginia. During a road trip together to Texas, the 6-year-old beagle mix got away from his pal.

(on camera): Now, Donny says he lost Skipper at a tollbooth here in Houston. He says when he went to throw money in the bucket he missed. When he went looking for help, he left the door open. That's when Skipper got out.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I felt like I lost a part of me.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (voice-over): After looking all over, Donny decided to drive to his aunt's house.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He just cried and cried and cried. And I said, "What?" He said, "I lost Skipper."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The next morning, Donny drove 26 hours straight back to Virginia without the dog he retired for. His Aunt Sue, though, put an ad about Skipper in the paper.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I didn't know whether I was ever going to get to see him again when he jumped out of the car.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A week later, Citizens for Animal Protection, who had Skipper, saw the ad, calling Donny in Virginia with the news.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He was absolutely frantic. He called my cell phone like six times.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Donny got back in his car, drove back to Houston. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'd go anywhere to pick this little guy up.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Surrounded by tears, the reunion took place. Skipper showing dog excitement and Donny showing his.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's so good to have him back.
