Weekend Attacks in Iraq Kill 2 Americans, 2 Japanese, 7 Spaniards

SEAN CALLEBS, CNN ANCHOR: Now on to Iraq, where a weekend of deadly attacks has ignited outrage in world capitals on three continents. The U.S., Spain and Japan are all reiterating their commitment despite the surging death toll among coalition personnel.
Let's now go live to the Iraqi capital with our CNN senior international correspondent, Nic Robertson, who brings us up to date with the latest information from there. Good day to you.
NIC ROBERTSON, CNN SR. INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Good day, Sean.
Well, the very latest we have from coalition officials here is confirmation of the killing of a contractor for the -- a large U.S. contract company, Kellogg, Brown and Root. This contractor was a senior security official for Kellogg, Brown and Root. He was driving towards a U.S. base north of Baghdad Saturday. His vehicle was attacked and he was gunned down. There are few other details about why he was targeted, but he was working for a very large U.S. contractor here that provides rebuilding services, that provides food services, that provides security services for the U.S., part of the coalition here in Iraq.
Also, the flag at half-staff over the Japanese embassy in Baghdad today. Security at the embassy also tight, mourning the death of two Japanese diplomats. They were driving to Tikrit, north of Baghdad, for a reconstruction conference.
According to coalition officials, they didn't have military security presence with them. They were, however, traveling in an armored vehicle, but when they stopped, got out of the vehicle, bought food and drink at the roadside near Tikrit, they were gunned down. Their driver also killed.
The seven Spanish intelligence agents who were gunned down in an ambush south of Baghdad yesterday, their bodies were flown out of Iraq to Kuwait today. The Spanish defense minister and Spanish intelligence chief there to receive the bodies, along with Spanish intelligence officials who survived the attack. They're flying on back to Spain today.
Two soldiers from the U.S. 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment killed when their convoy was ambushed Saturday very close to the Syrian border. Quite a deadly number of attacks, but a deadly day Saturday for all involved in the coalition -- Sean. CALLEBS: Indeed. Nic Robertson, thanks very much. The latest information from Baghdad.
