CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Well, you might say this next story is about the sweetest job on earth, that is if you have a real sweet tooth and no worries about your waistline.
Here's CNN's Andy Serwer.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANDY SERWER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Meet Arnold, Eric, John and Derrick. You don't know them, but you may want their jobs. They eat sweets for a living.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And the technique is very important. You stack the pie and put it in your mouth.

SERWER: Ben and Jerrys calls them flavor gurus. Their job? Come up with all the company's new ice creams, about a dozen new ones each year. Wavy gravy, chubby hubby, uncanny cashew, they had a hand in all of them.

I caught up with the gurus on a recent trip to eat their way through New York City. They have come down from Vermont for inspiration. You probably start your day with breakfast. They start with pie and lots of it.

This morning, it's the little pie company's sour cream apple walnut, Mississippi mud, key lime, and sweet potato.

Is that too big?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, it's perfect. It all depends how big your mouth is.

SERWER: The gurus are more than big eaters, they're experts. Two are trained chefs, one's a cafe owner, the other with a degree in dairy science.

After the pies, the day long buffet moves on to City Bakery. Here, they're tasting melted chocolate cookies, caramelized French toast, creme brulee, and pretzel croissants. Each year, they toy with about 150 experimental batches.

So what are some of the weirdest things you've ever tried, ice creams?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Almonds with pralined. And I had quite a bit of Tabasco sauce on the two, a savory sweet combination.

SERWER: Tabasco and almonds, like bloody Mary sorbet, popcorn and peanuts, and anchovy puree swirl, never made it out of the kitchen. Two stops down and believe it or not, they're hungry for lunch.

But here at Gotham Bar and Grill, they eventually get back to desert. Make that the entire desert menu. My belt a few notches looser, I had to call it a day. As for the gurus, they still had two more stops.

They say for this job you have to eat anything put in front of you. Well, anything but a little curbside competition.

Andy Serwer, CNN, New York.
