SEAN CALLEBS, CNN ANCHOR: Catherine, can you recall the most famous reindeer of all?
CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Of course I can.
CALLEBS: Rudolph is the easy one, of course. And did you know that Rudolph may -- may have had a secret?
CALLAWAY: That's what I've heard. Let's get more now from Leonard Villareal. He is from our affiliate KGTV.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose...

LEONARD VILLAREAL, KGTV (voice-over): We all know the saga of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. And we all know there were social issues. There may be gender issues as well.
Remember...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They used to laugh at him.
VILLAREAL (on camera): Him?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Rudolph.
VILLAREAL: Rudolph is a him?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.
VILLAREAL: Are you sure?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don't know. That's what everybody says.
VILLAREAL (voice-over): And what did your mom say about everybody? Reacting to a tip, we visit the San Diego Zoo. Toni Esperazza is providing their small herd a snack.
TONI ESPERAZZA, SAN DIEGO ZOO: Come on, girls. These are our reindeer girls.
VILLAREAL (on camera): You said, "Come on, girls."
ESPERAZZA: Girls.
VILLAREAL: They have antlers.
ESPERAZZA: They're antlers, yes.
VILLAREAL: So the guys have antlers, not the girls.
ESPERAZZA: No. Reindeer, both boys and girls, have antlers.
VILLAREAL (voice-over): As it turns out, reindeer are the only deer species where both male and female have antlers. OK. So far the world is still right side up.
Male and female reindeer lose their antlers every year. But at different times.
ESPERAZZA: Because during Christmas males don't have the antlers. Girls will keep their antlers during this whole time.
VILLAREAL: So following the universe's pattern of logic...
ESPERAZZA: Yes, Rudolph is a girl. I'm sorry, but...
VILLAREAL: The truth is not just out there, but up there. Thus, we can only come to one conclusion, a conclusion unsettling to some.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm permanently scarred for life, thank you very much.
VILLAREAL: Is it possible that since the song came out in 1949, the world's males have been getting credit for a remarkable task?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Only a female could try to (UNINTELLIGIBLE) in red velvet around the world and not get lost.
VILLAREAL: With names like Dancer and Vixen, we can only conclude that not just Rudolph is a female.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Everybody else behind her. It's all a group of girls getting together. And we all know that when girls get together, we get things done.
VILLAREAL: So now we stand and sing corrected.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call her names...
