HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Of course, most of the fabulous fashions wouldn't see much light of day if it weren't for the fashion photographer. CNN's Jason Carroll has a snapshot of one of them.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It has been said photographing fashion week is much like a contact sport. It's a fight for position. An elbow for the shot of Anna Nicole Smith kissing Betsy Johnson, or Liza Minnelli posing before a show. Calmly centered in the middle of it all is Dan Lecca, the house photographer. Not to be confused with the other kind.

DAN LECCA, PHOTOGRAPHER: We intend to photograph every single look that comes down the runway. I'm not a paparazzo. I'm a runway photographer.

CARROLL: Lecca's images keep Calvin Klein, Gucci, and Ralph Lauren calling for more. Not bad for this Romanian native who left for New York at age 19 and worked as a short-order cook before landing a job as a photographer in 1978. Now he's called the king of the catwalk.

LECCA: Did you miss any outfits? Why?

CARROLL: And with that title...

LECCA: You're not shooting this anymore.

CARROLL: ... comes a little bit of attitude.

LECCA: I'm sorry, guys. I'm in a hurry.

I need to express my anger immediately. It's my character.

CARROLL: Someone told me that you are "the" man when it comes to this. And in photography, they say he is the man you want to talk to.

LECCA: Well, yes, in a way it's true. I am the man.

CARROLL: He may have more drive than humility.

LECCA: I'm shooting for you. I just want to wish you good luck.

CARROLL: And at 57, this king has no plans to give up his throne anytime soon. Jason Carroll, CNN, New York.
