MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: An historic moment is under way in Afghanistan. Thousands are rushing to see a convoy's quest to forge support for a new government.
CNN's Kamal Hyder is with the convoy and he joins us this morning from Gardez, Afghanistan -- Kamal.
KAMAL HYDER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Miles, a very cold night again. We are over 8,000 feet. Gardez is an extremely remote area in Paktia and this peace march, indeed, now, in Gardez is now interestingly about 200 meters north of where we are located is where Jalala bin- Hakani (ph) used to live, the loyal commander to the Taliban. And that house was bombed.
Also, we have to the southeast the Shakikot (ph) area, where even today Allied bombers targeted suspected al Qaeda positions. We are told this region, of course, in Paktia, the Shakikot area is under bombardment and that Allied aircraft are still coming here.
So they convoy here at a time when this area is being bombed and, of course, an apprehension that with the different militias and, of course, with the different tribals pitted against each other, that there is a need now to forge a unity on, amongst the Pashtuns and to move ahead and support Mr. Karzai in Kabul, the interim government, and, of course, to bring Afghanistan back into the fold of the international community -- Miles.
O'BRIEN: CNN's Kamal Hyder, who is in Gardez, Afghanistan. Thank you very much for that report.
