MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: And now for another edition of looking at Lycra. You want to go to the gym? You want to look right, right?
Well, let's check in and see what the right togs are for working out.
Joining us this morning from "Health" magazine, beauty and fashion editor Colleen Sullivan, up there in New York City.
Colleen, good to see you.
COLLEEN SULLIVAN, "HEALTH" MAGAZINE: Good to see you, Miles. How are you doing?
O'BRIEN: I am well. I am well.
You're wearing a little tennis outfit there. Tell us about that.
SULLIVAN: Well, Miles, you know, you've heard that expression tennis whites? No more. Tennis outfits now are coming in lots of colors, a lot of great silhouettes, cuts, very fashionable and just like many other fashions we're talking about. The great news today is that fitness apparel is becoming more fashionable but you're not giving up on performance or durability. There's a lot of things at work with these new styles.
O'BRIEN: All right, well, we need a little wider shot here, Dee, if we could, just to show her the full.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK.
O'BRIEN: There she is. OK. Is that a tennis skirt you've got on there or is it a...
SULLIVAN: Let's see...
O'BRIEN: ... is it a pair of shorts or?
SULLIVAN: No, it's a tennis skirt and a little top and...
O'BRIEN: Oh, great. Yes. Yes, I like it. It looks good.
SULLIVAN: I can't say I play a lot of tennis, but if I did I would really like to wear this outfit.
O'BRIEN: It's a good outfit even if you don't play tennis.
SULLIVAN: Absolutely.
O'BRIEN: All right, let's -- why don't you introduce our next contestant on spanning the spandex.
SULLIVAN: Contestant number one is Judy. Well, you know, you just had a great lead-in, Miles, because a lot of these fashions don't look like fitness wear anymore. Now, if you look at Judy and you look at her shorts, they don't look like traditional biking shorts. Judy is our biker candidate. They look like shorts that you could go out to lunch with or you might go shopping in. But there's a little secret to...
O'BRIEN: I, you know, actually, I've got a confession to make. I'm wearing a pair right now.
SULLIVAN: Are you?
O'BRIEN: No, no, I'm not.
SULLIVAN: Well, underneath these shorts, Miles, is a little secret. There is underneath a Lycra spandex another pair of shorts so that the real biker shorts are underneath the traditional top biker shorts. But what's great about these with performance is that they're padded. So in the old days, bikers used to wear these really spandex tight biker shorts? These actually have a big padding on the back, which I don't know if Judy can show you, but it's there. Trust us.
O'BRIEN: All right, let's just leave it be. We'll take your word for it on that.
SULLIVAN: Take my word for it. And her, if you look at her top, Miles, you know, bright yellow. The shirt's by Polo. It's great for if you're riding in traffic.
O'BRIEN: Yes, all right.
SULLIVAN: Judy is going to turn around and show us what's so great, what makes this functional. It's got little pockets so she can hide her water.
O'BRIEN: Oh, you've got a -- yes, so you can bike. You've got to have the pockets there. You know what?
SULLIVAN: You can put, you've got...
O'BRIEN: We'd better move on, Colleen. I hate to say it, because we've got more people here and we're going to run out of time.
SULLIVAN: Absolutely. No problem. OK...
O'BRIEN: Judy, excellent work.
Thank you, Judy.
SULLIVAN: Great. Lindsey (ph).
O'BRIEN: Up next is Lindsey.
SULLIVAN: Lindsey. Lindsey. You know, walking is the number one fitness activity, Miles, among women in the United States and in the old days they used to wear, you know, gym shorts and old T-shirts and today you can see they a sports bra that has ingredients that actually fight bacteria, therefore it doesn't cause odor. You've got pants that are very fashionable. They've got the boot cut leg, very easy to walk in. It just makes walking a lot more enjoyable.
Walkers don't like to carry a lot of things in their hands and what's fabulous about this backpack is that it contains a water bag inside. So if you're walking, all you have to do is grab the little straw that's attached and you can drink right out of the straw, which is a really great little thing for walkers.
O'BRIEN: Excellent.
All right, next on our list.
SULLIVAN: OK. This is Allie (ph). Allie is doing...
O'BRIEN: Hello, Allie.
SULLIVAN: This is yoga. I don't know if you know a lot about yoga clothes, Miles, but a lot of people buy yoga clothes...
O'BRIEN: Not a thing.
SULLIVAN: Not a thing?
O'BRIEN: No.
SULLIVAN: I'll fill you in. A lot of people buy yoga clothes that don't even do yoga because they're so comfortable. You can't have zippers. You can't have buttons. So it's just very easy to move around, very mobile. This is a nylon and Lycra mix and it actually has an ingredient that wicks moisture away from your body and it goes actually into your clothes.
O'BRIEN: Can she get into a yoga position real quick, lotus position maybe?
SULLIVAN: Allie, he'd like for you to get into a lotus position.
O'BRIEN: Is it easy?
SULLIVAN: I don't know.
O'BRIEN: No, I'm not going to...
SULLIVAN: She's left the stage.
O'BRIEN: Exit.
SULLIVAN: That was a tough request.
O'BRIEN: Exit stage right.
Next victim. Ooh, boy.
SULLIVAN: OK, next victim is swimwear. Manufacturers have made great strides in making swimwear more durable. If you think back, most swimwear was just 100 percent cotton. It would break down after the season. If you look at Lea's (ph) swimsuit, this is something that a professional volleyball player would wear. It's got a Lycra and nylon blend. It's been double stitched. It's going to wear for a long period of time.
You want to look for a lot of coverage because, you know, this bathing suit by L.L. Bean is really great because it gives you coverage from the sun.
Goggles today, they don't mush right across your face. They've got a silicone gel in the goggle and around the back the straps are very comfortable.
These Speedo sandals are really wonderful. They don't even look like swim sandals anymore. They're got flexible soles...
O'BRIEN: All right, we can't, you've got to lower down a little bit so we can see him because we've got all stuff on the screen there.
SULLIVAN: We're going to go down.
O'BRIEN: OK.
SULLIVAN: You can see with Rick and Lea, both of their sandals are just very, you know, they're not traditional. They've got durable soles. They've got fabric inside that is very cushiony. You can wear it to the beach but you could also wear it out shopping.
Now here, Miles...
O'BRIEN: All right, Colleen, Colleen, we're really running out of time. Is there any more models? I don't want to...
SULLIVAN: No more models.
O'BRIEN: Oh, good. Finish it up.
SULLIVAN: We're going to end on our swim...
O'BRIEN: Finish it up then. Go ahead.
SULLIVAN: We're going to show you a little trick on Rick's outfit.
O'BRIEN: Yes? SULLIVAN: There's pockets all over his outfit so he can hide his keys, his I.D., money, his stash. And he, too, has sunglasses. You want to look for U.V. protection, wrap around, get as much protection from U.V. as you possibly can. These are kind of like a hybrid between sport glasses and regular sunglasses, very fashionable.
O'BRIEN: All right. Excellent fashion show. We should point out these are not professional models. They are friends of Colleen's.
Thanks for coming in, all of you.
SULLIVAN: Hopefully they'll remain friends of Colleen after this.
O'BRIEN: Yes, maybe former friends. But anyway, just, they can pick the bone with me, if you like.
SULLIVAN: There you go.
O'BRIEN: Colleen Sullivan is with -- I'm sorry, what's the name of the magazine again?
SULLIVAN: "Health" magazine.
O'BRIEN: "Health" magazine. Of course.
Thanks very much for being with us and thank you for sharing some of these excellent fashions. We'll see you again soon, we hope.
SULLIVAN: Thanks for having us, Miles. Take care.
