CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: 007 is back in theaters this weekend in "Die Another Day." Pierce Brosnan returns as James Bond and his Bond girl, Halle Berry.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PIERCE BROSNAN, ACTOR: Magnificent view.

HALLE BERRY, ACTOR: It is, isn't it? Too bad it's lost...

CALLAWAY: Well, the cranky critic is here to talk more about the new Bond movie, as well as a film going up against 007. Actually, you know what? We don't have time to talk about anything but 007 today, Chuck. We've got breaking news this morning, so we're going to stick with that.

Chuck Schwartz with us, the cranky critic, to talk about 007.

Wow, what a scene with Halle Berry there, a little nod to "Dr. No," I guess.

CHUCK SCHWARTZ, CRANKYCRITIC.COM: It's a nod to Ursula Andress coming out of the water, yes. And let me point out that when that happened when I saw the movie a week ago, the audience burst out into applause.

CALLAWAY: Did they really?

SCHWARTZ: Yes, they did. I don't know if it's because they just loved Halle Berry or Halle Berry's breasts, both of which are very nice. But it was just, this is the most fun Bond we've had in 20 years. I mean let's get right to the point. It's a little long. Madonna stops the thing like a truck. But other than that, everything that you wanted in a Bond movie that you've been waiting years and years for them to get right they finally got right.

CALLAWAY: We just can't get enough of Halle Berry, coming up the beach here. We're just going to keep showing that so the viewers will stay with us.

SCHWARTZ: She's got a pink bikini that she wears through this also quite impressive.

CALLAWAY: Well, let's talk about...

SCHWARTZ: She also...

CALLAWAY: Let's talk a little bit about the action quickly, because I know that there's an incredible scene at the beginning of this movie.

SCHWARTZ: In North Korea. What they've done is there was only one way to put life back into this sock puppet, as I call it. They have to make Bond the bad guy and don't get your knickers in a rumple, as they say in Britain. It only lasts about 10 minutes. Bond goes into North Korea to mess up an exchange of diamonds for weapons and apparently someone within MI6 has betrayed him. So the rest of the movie becomes the hunt for the spy within the spy organization. Vengeance is mine, sayeth Bond. And a multi-billionaire who doesn't want to rule the world, he wants to start WWIII.

We're looking at Korea right now. This is the beginning of the show.

CALLAWAY: Right. This is.

SCHWARTZ: It's just, it begins and basically you don't get time to breathe until two hours and 10 minutes later.

CALLAWAY: Who is the guy that's one of the bad guys? And I'm sorry that I don't know his name, but we just saw him there, and he has the diamonds in his face.

SCHWARTZ: The diamonds in the face.

CALLAWAY: Right.

SCHWARTZ: That's Rick Yune.

CALLAWAY: He's incredible.

SCHWARTZ: He's, he plays a bad guy named Zao. There's obvious links back to Ijov (ph) and in that he's Asian and he's bad and he's got his own little gimmick. The nice thing about "Die Another Day" is that when they were making it, this was supposed to be Brosnan's last movie. They have tossed in tributes to the great Bond moments from the 19 movies that preceded this one.

CALLAWAY: Right.

SCHWARTZ: There's, anyone that's watched Bond for their entire life, this is a real male, you know, every three years we go to the movies, you're going to catch bits and pieces of things you've seen before, anywhere from how the girls act to a big satellite weapon in the sky. And it's not nostalgia, but it's just like a familiarity that actually is fun.

CALLAWAY: It is funny. The best part is when they play the theme, the music for the very first time. It gets the movie going. That's the best part.

SCHWARTZ: I've got to admit, this is the first time that I've actually liked the Bond theme song that Madonna did, which pretty much offsets the fact that she has to appear in the movie and try to act, which she can't.

CALLAWAY: Oh, Jack.

Jack Schwartz. It says a lot, though, if you like the movie as a whole, though.

SCHWARTZ: Oh, yes.

CALLAWAY: Thanks for being with us this morning.

SCHWARTZ: Thank you.
