Body Found In Beverly Hills Believed To Be Dr. Laura Schlessinger's Mother

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Police in Beverly Hills are working to confirm the identity of a badly decomposed body discovered inside an apartment. That doesn't sound like much news, does it? But as CNN's Charles Feldman reports, they believe the woman was the mother of the radio personality Dr. Laura.

CHARLES FELDMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Laura Schlessinger, Dr. Laura to countless fans of her books and radio program, received word of the bizarre discovery earlier this week. Beverly Hills police telling her that they found the body of a woman, the victim of a homicide, in the apartment belonging to her mother.
Police say they went to the apartment after a concerned neighbor reported not seeing the occupant of the apartment in at least several weeks.
Police say positive ID is still pending, that the body deteriorated badly over a prolonged period of time.
Dr. Laura spoke about the circumstances of her mother's death on her radio program Friday.

DR. LAURA SCHLESSINGER, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: It was her choice to be estranged from all her family. And I deeply regret that despite any attempts I made to make contact or stay connected, she died without that ever being accomplished. And it's very sad, it's very horrifying, obviously, and very sad.

FELDMAN: Laura Schlessinger has proven to be a highly controversial personality. Her TV show was canceled amid low ratings after gay groups attacked her for making antihomosexual remarks, but she continues to enjoy success on radio and has written several books.
(on camera): Police in Beverly Hills won't say exactly how Dr. Laura's mother was killed, and they say they have no suspects for the crime at this time.
