Experts Say Pumping Iron Is Healty Even For Children

JULIETTE DUFUS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Pumping iron is great for strengthening the heart and building muscle in adults. Experts say the same holds true for kids.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All of the research really points to the fact that it's very healthy, as long as it's monitored, as long as the children don't have too much weight.

DUFUS: Experts say kids can start strength training as early as age 12. But keep in mind the program must be tailored for them. Studies suggest hard training and bad technique can restrict their growth and delay puberty. Health experts agree educating children early about the benefits of exercise can help curb the increase in childhood obesity.
