MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Meanwhile, across America protesters will be out in force today.
CNN's Maria Hinojosa is in New York City, where one demonstration is getting organized this hour -- Maria.

Hello, Maria, are you there?

MARIA HINOJOSA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, we're here very early in the morning in a very bitter cold day in midtown Manhattan. But just to give you a sense, there are already some people who are out here in the protest mood, been out here since just about 15 minutes ago, already doing some chanting.

Now, these streets over on this way will soon be blocked off. There will be a total of 40 blocks that will be blocked off, from 34th Street up to about 72nd Street. Some of the organizers are already here. They are expecting a large crowd. They've got a permit for about 100,000 people here just north of the United Nations. They have not been allowed to gather in front of the United Nations and are not going to be allowed to march at all in this area.

Now, they are saying that this is a large coalition, a broad- based coalition of union members and grassroots community groups and peace groups. But some other interesting groups that are going to be speaking here, September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, these are people who lost relatives on September 11 who are against any war with Iraq, as well as a new group called Military Families Speak Out. These are people who have sons and daughters in the military but who are asking for no war with Iraq.

Lots of speakers, including high-profile celebrities like Rosie Perez and Pete Seeger and Danny Glover. Susan Sarandon was at the headquarters yesterday, and she had this to say.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SUSAN SARANDON, ACTRESS: It's going to be very expensive. We've not been told enough about it. The case has not been made. We're not going to go to war on spec. And as a mom, I'm terrified.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HINOJOSA: They have said to us that this is going to be planned as a peaceful demonstration, but whether or not there may be some groups here who decide to do civil disobedience, we'll be seeing that later on. Back to you in the studio.

O'BRIEN: Maria Hinojosa, New York City.
