CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: All right, let's talk about the race in California, shall we? Because it's deadline day for California's multitude of governor wannabes. It's time to pony up that $3,500 entry fee.
CNN's Thelma Gutierrez joins us live from the Los Angeles County Election Center -- how many people are there?

THELMA GUTIERREZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, in all truth, Carol, because it is bright and early here in Los Angeles, it's just myself and one other reporter at this very minute. Of course, that's all likely to change in just a few hours. Now, the clock is definitely ticking. The doors to the county register or recorder's office opens in just three hours and this is the last opportunity, as you had mentioned, for all those 150 hopefuls in Los Angeles County alone to come forth with their $3,500, their 65 signatures and all of their nomination paperwork.

Now, only after those signatures are validated can that candidate's name be placed on the ballot.

Now, statewide, as of last night, as of close of business last night, we understand that there are 680 hopefuls who had been counted. But of those candidates, of that huge number, only some 58 had actually completed all of their paperwork and turned in their money.

Now, of course, one of the high profile people that has gone through the process is actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Day before yesterday, he showed up right here at the L.A. County registrar, recorder's office, to take out his nomination papers. He was greeted by screaming fans and dozens of reporters.

Now, we were told by his press person that he would return today to this very office to file his paperwork, but an officer here says that the actor is not likely to show up, that instead he may send a representative in his place to turn in those papers.

Another person who we're expecting here today is Republican businessman Bill Simon, who, of course, was defeated by Gray Davis back in November. He's at it again and we understand that he will come back, turn in all of his paperwork. Again, that deadline is 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time -- Carol, back to you.

COSTELLO: Yes, sorry, I forgot about the time change out there. So you're up really early and we do appreciate it. I'm sure it will become a circus later on, Thelma.

Thelma Gutierrez live for us this morning.

We have this program note to tell you about. Tune in tonight for a CNN special report, "The Road To Recall: The Battle for California." That airs tonight at 10:00 Eastern time.

And later this hour...

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: America will have a proper future if Arnie gets in.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He's plastic. He's a bunch of muscles and a monitor and voice.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

COSTELLO: Whoa, Mr. Schwarzenegger's home town on his run for governor. Do you think he'll get an overseas endorsement? We'll answer that question later.
