Lottery Winner Becomes Most Hated Man in Town

SUZANNE MALVEAUX, CNN ANCHOR: Well, I'm sure we've all wondered what we would do if we won the lottery. So imagine winning more than $16 million and still becoming the most hated man in town.
Phillip Ray Smith (ph) explains.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (voice-over): Michael Carroll isn't exactly your average multi-millionaire. The first time he played the lottery, he won $9.7 million on a lucky dip. Though he's rich beyond most people's wildest dreams, in the Norfolk town of Swaffham, he's his neighbors' worst nightmare. Carroll calls this the destruction derby, a racetrack he built in a field behind his house.

RUTH LEEKS, NEIGHBOR: All you could hear was thump, thump, thump way over that hill. It was bloody difficult.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: His neighbors say there's no justice that someone the papers have called the lotto lout can win so much money.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: At the time, you think we, you know, you pay your money, you're entitled to win the same as anyone else. And in hindsight, I'd say no.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: During this derby, the fire brigade had to be called when a transit van went up in flames. Carroll and his friends carried on drinking and later got out their guns. Shooting is another favorite hobby. For now, Michael Carroll's luck is holding out. After a string of crimes, he recently escaped a prison sentence for avoiding community service. He was given a curfew and an electronic tag but lives to race another day.
