RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN ANCHOR: You may be wondering about reaction in Iraq to the decision of Saddam Hussein's status as a POW.
CNN's Satinder Bindra is live in Baghdad. He's got that reaction for us now. Satinder?
SATINDER BINDRA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Renay.
Some disappointment being expressed here, both on the street and by some members of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council. Now, they believe that by conferring POW status on Saddam Hussein, he'll have some rights under the Geneva Conventions, and these rights will make it very difficult for Saddam Hussein to be tried for crimes against humanity in an Iraqi court.
Now, if you'll recall, Renay, on December 13, shortly after Saddam Hussein's capture, there was a sense here in Iraq and throughout Iraq that Saddam Hussein should indeed be tried here. Now, Iraqis today also pointing out today that U.S. authorities had promised them that Saddam Hussein would be tried by an Iraqi court.
Moving on, there have been other developments here in Iraq over the past 24 hours. The first incident in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, here two Iraqi policemen were shot dead. They were shot by U.S. forces.
Now, U.S. forces say they were responding to a call, they were responding to a call after hearing that two Iraqi families had been fighting each other. When they reached the scene, they saw two men in long coats (ph) firing weapons. They were asked to identify themselves repeatedly, and when they did not, the U.S. forces said, they opened fire.
So two Iraqi policemen killed in that incident.
Also in the north, in Tikrit, U.S. forces say they are now investigating an incident. In this incident, it was alleged that four Iraqis were shot dead by U.S. forces.
Back to you.
SAN MIGUEL: Satinder Bindra, live in Baghdad. Thanks so much.
