HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Now to Iraq. At least three U.S. soldiers were killed this morning near Kirkuk, and a deadly car bomb blew up near an Iraqi police station in Mosul.
For the very latest, CNN's Michael Holmes is joining us from Baghdad this morning. Mike, I know these are two developing stories. What do you know at this time?

MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, the worst incident, Heidi, was in Mosul, which is about 220 kilometers north of Baghdad. It's a place where there have been many attacks against coalition troops, and also Iraqi police.

This was, however, a scene of absolute carnage, this car bomb literally tearing apart many of the victims. The target was a police station. This is Iraq's third-largest city, and this was a big police station. It was payday too, so it was crowded, although many of the victims were also civilians, horribly injured by this blast.

Now, we're told today car drove up, drove through a police barricade close to the entrance to the police station, and detonated. The latest casualty figures being reported are nine dead and dozens injured, perhaps as many as 45 or so.

Now, you mentioned the attack on U.S. troops. That happened in the north also, about 40 kilometers or so southwest of Kirkuk, the oil-rich city up there. Now, what happened in that incident was a U.S. convoy was passing by and the ubiquitous roadside bomb blew up and killed three servicemen from the 4th Infantry Division, Heidi.

COLLINS: All right, Michael Holmes, thanks so much for the very latest, coming from Baghdad this morning.
