MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: In the town of Stevens City, Virginia, everybody is all abuzz. The population is only about 1,100, keep that in mind, because somewhere, somebody sold the winning lottery ticket. We're talking about the Mega Millions Lottery, a $230 million jackpot. The odds were astronomical and it appears that one ticket was, in fact, sold for one single winner.
On the phone now, Vangie. She is at the Red Apple convenience store.
Vangie, were you the store that sold the ticket?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, I guess we did. I'm so excited.
SAVIDGE: How do you know?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The guy is here right now and he showed me his badge and said yes, we're the winners.
SAVIDGE: So I presume this is somebody from, what, the state lottery commission or...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, yes. I'm so excited I'm about ready to cry.
SAVIDGE: Well, congratulations.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, thank you.
SAVIDGE: Obviously it's big news in town. It's good news for the owner of the store there but who...
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, exactly. I'll have to call Harry Simpson, yes.
SAVIDGE: I think he already probably knows.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, I'm so excited.
SAVIDGE: But let me ask you this, any idea, have you been trying to speculate who might have bought that winning ticket?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, we're looking at everybody's tickets in here when they come through and we haven't been lucky. I even called T.J. He works at the store. He said he was going to buy some tickets last night and I haven't heard from him yet either. So we're not sure who the big winner is yet. SAVIDGE: Well, give us an idea of the town. I mean who lives there? What do people do and would money like this really be welcome?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Just like country folk. And we have, I think we have a very good store. We have a lot of people come in here. We actually treat a lot of people like family. We have a girl that comes in, her name is Ruth Clark, we even celebrate her birthday, even though she doesn't work here. So we're really a country store. We get along with people and just, it's like a family thing.
SAVIDGE: Well, has anybody come in and sort of looked suspicious and very wealthy?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, not that I know of.
SAVIDGE: Nobody yet? Well, what was the feeling in the store? Did you know last night that perhaps you were the big winners, as far as selling those tickets?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No. We did sell a lot of tickets. We were very, very busy in the morning. I'm not sure how the evening was, but we were really steady. So it was a very hopping day yesterday. It was very good.
SAVIDGE: Well, this has got to be the talk of the town, isn't it?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, it is. I have to wait till I get home and tell my husband. He is going to be flattered.
SAVIDGE: Well, congratulations.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you so much.
SAVIDGE: Obviously, you're the big store. Vangie, it's wonderful talking with you. It's great excitement in that town. And all you've got to do now is call us when you find out who the real winner is.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, that's right. I'll be anxious to find out who the winner would be.
SAVIDGE: All right, thank you very much.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: But it made my day.
SAVIDGE: Well, it made our day, as well.
Thank you.
Good news is always welcomed here.
