The crisis in Haiti is being described as sheer anarchy this morning. Police are nowhere in sight. Armed gangs are killing, looting, and setting fires. Rebels seeking to overthrow President Jean-Bertrand Aristide say they have surrounded the Haitian capital. The president vows not to step down.
The U.S. is hopeful that Iraq's governing council will meet today's deadline to agree on a transitional law. That law will pave the way for an interim government. Iraq's minority Terpin (ph), though, say they've decided to go on a hunger strike to protest what they call inequities in the process.
The September 11 commission will have an extra two months to wrap up its work. After intense pressure from lawmakers, House speaker Dennis Hastert dropped his objection to the extension. He feared that the report would land right in the middle of the presidential campaign. The report is now due out on July 26.
Now let's get back to the debate.
