Possibilities and Concerns Concerning A Corona Virus Vaccine; Challenges of Working from Home; CNN Hero`s Success with Pet Adoption

CARL AZUZ, CNN 10 ANCHOR: Welcome to September and it`s very first edition of CNN 10. I`m Carl Azuz. It` always great to have you watching. Today`s
show starts with a look at some possibilities and some controversy concerning a corona virus vaccine. Since COVID-19 started spreading
outside China early this year, more than 25 million cases have been diagnosed worldwide and they`re been about 6 million cases diagnosed in the
United States. That`s one of the countries racing to develop a vaccine for the disease and the leader of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration who`s
approval is needed to put a vaccine on the market recently said the FDA could give that approval before Phase III trials are over. During testing,
Phase III is when a vaccine is given to thousands of people to see how safe and effective it is.
Before then, it`s only tested on smaller more limited groups. Not waiting for Phase III to be complete could allow a vaccine to be available sooner.
Normally, experts say a vaccine could take 10 years or more to develop even the ones that are quickly turned around take more than three years.
Nations around the world are trying to get one approved in less than one year. That`s part of the reasons while some consumers and doctors are
concerned. In fact, a group of American doctors is calling for an independent commission to review a corona virus vaccine before it`s made
available. They say they trust American testing and ethical guidelines but they think consumers might not trust the approval from an FDA committee.
Because some of its members also work for government agencies and pharmaceutical companies. Some of those companies are involved in
developing and distributing vaccines. So this group of doctors believes an independent review of data will help reassure Americans of a vaccine`s
safety. Many people are skeptical of vaccines in general and in a CNN poll conducted in August, 40 percent of Americans said they wouldn`t want a
corona virus vaccine when it comes available.
10 Second Trivia. Which of these companies employs the most people? Yahoo, TikTok, Twitter or Facebook. Facebook is the biggest here with more than
40,000 employees, half of whom could be working remotely for years.
If you watch CNN 10 before March of this year, you never saw me in our remote studio which looks a lot like my bookshelf. We`ll probably be
producing from here and other remote locations throughout the rest of 2020. A lot of companies sent employees home to work when corona virus broke out.
Some like Facebook and Twitter have said they could do this for years if they want but working from home brings challenges of its own. And
companies like Yahoo and IBM that have tried this in the past, later asked workers to return to the office.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What started off as, like, a vacation from the office I believe has turned into more of like, gosh I don`t want to use the word
imprisonment because it sounds so negative. But it`s starting to feel like that.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Steven Qwon (ph) funs Keri cubby (ph), a four year old start out that provides IT and payment solutions to preschools and
daycares.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All of our employees are amazing and I know they`re really resilient but when four out of six people come to us and they`re
like, hey, there could be an emotional breakdown coming pretty soon. When you`re in an environment where there is no physical proximity, everything
just feels like there`s no end to the day.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And that is showing up in statistics. The National Bureau of Economic Research estimated in July that working from home means
the average person`s work day is 48.5 minutes longer based on their analysis on a sample or workers in North America, Europe and the Middle
East. Another challenge, convincing employees to take time off. New York venture capital firm, Anyac Ventures (ph) is shutting down completely for
two weeks this month to make sure employees rest. Then some are taking more drastic measures, Alison Ventures (ph), a software and date
engineering company is now testing a four day work week with 10 hour days.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A four day week also helps you create a -- a clear boundary between work and life and it -- it helps restore some of that
balance for folks when they`re working from home. And then added productivity benefits of having a much earlier start.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Keri Cubby (ph) team, welcome to another hour of 2000`s trivia.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Steven Qwon (ph) is planning more virtual events like this trivia night to help boost morale. He`s even looking into partnering
with a customer to provide employees with childcare. He`s worried for his company`s future.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If we were to hire five people right now, how do you train them? You can`t get them all in one room. The sense of cohorts has
kind of disappeared. I think that there could be a potential delay in our ability to meet certain goals for the company based on the lack of
efficiency and scaling.

AZUZ: Working from home take on a whole new dynamic when you`re office is an animal shelter. The state of California has allowed shelters to remain
open during the shutdowns but a former CNN Hero who runs one decided to find a way to work remotely anyway and she`s still seeing success.

SHERRI FRANKLIN: It`s really hard right now but I like to hold on to some of the good news. Some of the good news is that there are literally no
dogs or cats left in so many shelters because people want comfort. I`m Sherry Franklin and I`m the CEO and founder of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue
in San Francisco.
Let`s get you in. Hi, everybody
We rescue senior dogs that are in danger of euthanasia. And find them fabulous, new loving homes. When we got the shelter in place order for the
COVID-19, we actually decided we would close our shelter and have everybody work from home and we moved 86 dogs into foster homes. What was really
amazing was the community that poured into help, we got over 200 foster applications in a week and usually we get 20 in a week.
Good morning everyone. Thanks so much for joining me. Let`s talk about (inaudible).
We started working on protocols around contact free meetings. We are having meet and greets which are usually done in person.
Do you have any questions for us right now?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don`t think so. I`m looking to adopt him.
FRANKLIN: Cool. We`re doing those virtually so that new adopters can meet their dogs before they actually touch them.

FRANKLIN: Because we did an interview on, I think like on Monday or Tuesday and then it was like hard to make (inaudible).
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think, like, for a lot of people during this period, nothing exciting is happening. It`s very mundane day to day so it`s nice
to have like a whole new thing to explore over the past few weeks.
FRANKLIN: We really have honed in on every single step that could possibly have any contamination. We actually bathe the dog. Put on a new harness.
We`re all wearing gloves and masks and then we have a leash that`s newly laundered in a Ziploc bag that`s been sanitized.

FRANKLIN: It`s really been so heartwarming to actually see the first time the new adopter actually gets to touch and meet their dog in person.
Because we`ve done the rest of it all virtually. We have adopted out 78 dogs since shelter in place about three and half weeks ago. My dream and
my hope is that shelters will continue to be empty.

AZUZ: A penguin watching a show about penguins. 10 out of 10. This is Pierre (ph). He`s an endangered Rock Hopper penguin who was found in
Australia in need of medical attention. Because of a feather molting issue, he`s got to stay out of the water but thankfully for Pierre (ph),
there`s no limit on his screen time and he loves to binge watch anything related to penguins. The zoo that`s helping him is looking to get him
together with other Rock Hopper penguins in person.
So help is just a "Rock Hop" skip and a jump away but at least his virtual interactions fit the "bill" for now. It shows that he`s able to "channel"
his energy into "screening" quality entertainment because he gives a "flipper" about "penguin" things get back to normal. Yes. I`m Carl Azuz
