CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: This year's Academy Awards ceremony returns to its roots, going back to Hollywood to be broadcasted. CNN's Ann McDermott take a look at the Academy's remote travels and tracks Oscar's trip back home.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ANN McDERMOTT, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): A Republican was in the White House, and Charlton Heston was keeping busy winning Oscars the last time the Oscars were held in Hollywood itself.
Since then, the awards have ping-ponged between Los Angeles and Santa Monica, but they started in Hollywood proper way back in 1929 at the then new Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where Clara Boe (ph) was honored and so was her film, a silent called "Wings."
But was "Gone With the Wind" the first color movie to win Best Picture honored in Hollywood proper? It was not. And was Sidney Poitier the first African-American winner of a Best Actor Oscar honored in Hollywood? He was not.
What about those Oscar dissers? Did George C. Scott and Marlon Brando refuse their Oscars in Hollywood? No and no. Well, yes but during of those times when the Oscars were held in Hollywood itself in the '50s mostly, some of Hollywood didn't seem to care much. But most of them will be present here at the new Kodak Theater in Hollywood, and Oscar may stay here a while.
RUSS JOYNER, KODAK THEATER COMPLEX: I think it's one of the great moments in Hollywood.
McDERMOTT: Yes, Oscar's back in town, a Republican's in the White House, and Charlton Heston is still keeping busy. Ann McDermott, CNN, Hollywood.
