KRIS OSBORN, CNN ANCHOR: The stars of the small screen are coming out to shine at Los Angeles historic Shrine Auditorium. TV's highest honor, the Emmy, of course, will be handed out tonight, in glitzy ceremonies at the spiffed-up theater. CNN's Kendis Gibson joins us now live from the red carpet with a preview. So Kendis, are you feeling the buzz yet, or is it still too early?
KENDIS GIBSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Kris, I'm not sure if it's the buzz that I'm feeling or just perspiration. It is incredibly, incredibly hot right now in Southern California for a September day. Not sure if you can see this, but you see that right there? That's about 103 degrees here on the red carpet. A lot of the celebrities are going to be feeling that.

And you know, we have another camera shot that shows many of the crowds who have been out here for I'd say about three hours or so -- those folks have been enduring that heat, all of that just to kind of see some of their favorite celebrities, and we do believe many of the stars will begin getting here within the next hour or so. But they are probably going to do the sprint up and down the red carpet, because it is so hot.

Of course, you realize all of the talk today is about "Six Feet Under." It really could be "Six Feet Under's" night. Brought to you by the screenwriter for "American Beauty," the series on HBO -- it's a freshman series -- is up for 23 awards, and many believe that the drama will take home the best drama series -- best drama series award, probably going to steal it from "The West Wing," which has won that award for the last two years. "The West Wing," though, is also still up 21 nominations, including one for Martin Sheen.

Others in that category including "CSI," "24," "Law & Order." But also, this could be a very friendly night. As you have probably heard all of the buzz, it could be "Friends" years after some eight seasons -- they've never actually won -- never been nominated before in the best comedy series category. And they are nominated tonight and are expected to win in that category. And it could also be Jennifer Aniston's evening. She is nominated, of course, as best lead actress for a comedy, as are Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry in the actor for comedy, 11 nominations in all for "Friends."

And also, though, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry, they're up against sort of like a surprise nominee, Bernie Mac, the star of his own show on the Fox network. Nobody really expected him to get a nomination for best actor in a comedy, but he did, and a lot of folks are saying that he might be tonight's big surprise. So besides all of that and besides those gripping temperatures, Kris, this could be the night that Hollywood returns to glamour and all the glitz after taking a year off from all that sort of stuff last year. But that's the latest here on the red carpet. I'm Kendis Gibson. Let's go back to you, Kris.

OSBORN: Kendis Gibson, thank you very much for that debrief on the red and sunny red carpet. Thanks a lot.
