CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: The specter of terrorism haunts airports on opposite sides of the nation tonight. Authorities say a man breached security at Los Angeles International today and another hid box cutters and scissors in his backpack at Atlantic City International. CNN's Patty Davis is following both cases from our Washington bureau. Patty, where do you want to start?
PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Carol, authorities arrested a 21-year-old Bulgarian national this morning at the Atlantic City International Airport. What raised suspicion was that the scissors that he had in his bag were concealed in a bar of soap. Now, the box cutters were inside a box next to a bottle of lotion in the man's backpack.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Box cutters and scissors are prohibited items not allowed through security checkpoints. The fact that they were somehow packaged in a way that would encourage us or challenge us rather to find them is also somewhat concerning. Our job is to stop these items from getting onboard an aircraft. That's what the crew did today and we think that that's a much better situation to have happen than to have to deal with this issue at 30,000 feet.
END VIDEO CLIP)
DAVIS: The Transportation Security Administration says the man was scheduled to fly from Atlantic City to South Carolina around 8:00 a.m. this morning. He was the first person at the airport this morning, arriving at 4:45 a.m. and the last person to get onto his flight, basically going through that security checkpoint, the last person to do that, and that's when screeners found those scissors and box cutters.
Now the man says that he wrapped up those scissors, as well as the box cutters, to keep them from ripping up other items in his bag. Further raising the TSA's interest here, the man was traveling on a one-way ticket that he bought over the Internet sometime in August. He's being held on state charges of possessing a prohibited item and authorities say that he's a student from Bulgaria who was here in the U.S. for a four-month work/travel program -- Carol.
LIN: Learning a lot right now. All right, thank you very much Patty Davis reporting live from Washington.
