Rude Awakening in Hawaii

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: It wasn't exactly what people inside the condos at Century Center expected to see at 7:00 a.m. Folks inside the building, one of the tallest in Hawaii, say a Chinese Airlines 747 passed close enough for them to actually see the people in the plane. We have this report now from CNN affiliate KI-TV.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MAHELANI RICHARDSON, KI-TV CORRESPONDENT: Sylvia Thomas was walking her dog shortly before 7:00 when she looked up and got a bit of a fright.

SYLVIA THOMAS: Right up here and it went behind the building and came out the other side, not way up there but right across there.

RICHARDSON: Up above the 12th floor, one woman says she could actually see passengers inside the plane.

ANA MARIE VAISANEN, BUILDING RESIDENT: This roar became louder and louder and louder and then I walk over to this corner where the two panes meet, and I look out and there is a 747. I thought oh, I've got to look up to see a plane. I didn't have to look up. The plane is right here. All I did was I followed it and I followed it right towards Punch Bowl (ph).

RICHARDSON: Given September 11, all Vaisanen could this of was why so low and so far inland. She says the plane had a white body and a red tail marked with an emblem she later described as China Airlines. Other residents say the plane came less than 30 feet from the building with one of the wings passing over the fourth floor recreation deck. The tenants hope this is the one and only close call they'll ever see.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I'm a retired nurse and I don't want such a disaster to happen here.
