ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Barring an unexpected change of heart, look for Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman to announce tomorrow a bid for the White House in 2004, more from CNN's senior political analyst Bill Schneider.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
WILLIAM SCHNEIDER, CNN SENIOR POLITICAL ANALYST (voice-over): On Monday, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman is expected to say that he's running for president in 2004.
SEN. JOSEPH LIEBERMAN (D), CONNECTICUT: Hi, everybody. Thanks for coming out.
SCHNEIDER: Now what's Senator Lieberman got going for him? Well, one name recognition. He was on the ticket with Al Gore. That means he's pre-certified as qualified to be president.
Number two, he's got the Clinton-Gore connection. That gives him a lot of support, for instance among African-American voters who are big fans of Clinton and Gore.
He also has a relatively moderate voting record, hawkish on international affairs, conservative on values, and a very religious man.
(on camera): What's Senator Lieberman got going against him? Some Democrats may fell that he's too conservative, that he's never been a champion of liberal causes.
(voice-over): Some may be looking for a fresher face, someone not tied to the past. And, there's the fact that he's Jewish.
(on camera): I'm in South Florida talking to some so-called condo commandos in the heavily Democratic and strongly Jewish condominium developments here. This is Joe Lieberman's base.
(voice-over): The voters here respect him and they'd like to support him but first they have to deal with some serious concerns. Can a Jewish candidate get elected president?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: As much as I love the man and he's a brilliant and good. He's everything but in my opinion he won't make it.
SCHNEIDER (on camera): Those are tough questions for Jewish voters and for all Democrats. I'll be talking about them tomorrow on CNN's "INSIDE POLITICS" with Judy Woodruff at 4:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 Pacific.
William Schneider CNN, Dearfield Beach, Florida.
