FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: In California, Laci Peterson's family and loved ones are remembering her today on what would have been her 28th birthday. CNN's Rusty Dornin is live in Modesto, California, with more on the plans for the day -- Rusty.
RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Fredricka, that's true by all accounts. May 4, 2003, should have been a very joyous occasion for Laci Peterson and her family. She would have turned 28 years old today and should have been holding in her arms her son, Connor, who would have been early three months old.
Instead, this community is in mourning for her. There will be a community service starting just in about an hour at the Modesto First Baptist Church. People began lining up outside the church about two hours before the service even began. Now, there will be about 3,500 people who will be able to be either inside the church or in the overflow area. Friends and family, of course, of Laci Peterson will be speaking, and there will be a video presentation involving Laci during that service.
Scott Peterson asked to attend this memorial service, was turned down by the sheriff here in Stanislaus County. Apparently, in some cases, inmates are allowed to attend. He is not being allowed to attend this.
Also, Scott's family decided has decided not to attend the service, either. They say they don't want to make this a three ring circus. They don't want to distract any attention from the service and they say they will be grieving on their own at their home down in San Diego.
Meantime, of course, at Laci Peterson's home, there had been a shrine and many people visiting the home earlier today but they're not supposed to be leaving, you know, gifts or notes to her, but people seem determined to do that, to show some kind of caring for her on this day of remembrance -- Fredricka.
WHITFIELD: All right. Rusty, thank you very much.
