FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: To Iraq now, where the military has launched a new operation dubbed "Sidewinder". It's aimed at stopping the almost daily ambushes and killings of U.S. forces. And there was another attack today. Two soldiers were wounded when their convoy was hit by some kind of explosion. CNN's Nic Robertson has the latest from Baghdad.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
NIC ROBERTSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That attack occurring on the main highway that links Baghdad to the city airport. The city airport a major base of U.S. military operations. That section of highway used regularly by many, many U.S. troops. Indeed, over the last few weeks, there have been a number of attacks on vehicles traveling that particular section of highway.
The attacks Sunday morning, according to U.S. officials, an explosive device went off as a convoy was passing by it. They say it's not clear whether the explosive device was thrown at the vehicles or whether it was placed in the road and then detonated as the vehicles went by. Two U.S. servicemen injured in that attack. One Iraqi civilian killed.
Also, early Sunday morning "Operation Sidewinder" has begun to get under way. That is an operation by U.S. troops north of Baghdad. An effort, they say, to round up more loyalists to Saddam Hussein. That area north of Baghdad known for, in some areas, support for the former Iraqi leader.
What they -- troops say they are looking for is people loyal to Saddam Hussein and anybody who may have been plotting operations against the U.S. troops. Now, so far, they've detained 60 Iraqis plus obtained a number of documents and secured, as well, a number of weapons.
Nic Robertson, CNN, Baghdad.
