SEAN CALLEBS, CNN ANCHOR: Everyone gets cuts on their fingers at one point or another. The next time it happens to you, you may want to take care of it quickly. Especially after watching our next story. Margaret Carlo from affiliate WBBH explains.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
MARGARET CARLO, WBBH CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Ed Cotton got a wake-up call today he'll never forget.
ED COTTON: There's a nude man four foot from my front door, and we both said, well, that's Brad, that's our neighbor.
CARLO: Police ordered Ed and his wife out of their house.
COTTON: We looked in our porch, and there was blood from one end to the other. It came through the screens against the windows, against the door.
CARLO: Authorities say their 31-year-old neighbor, Brad Meich (ph), severely cut his thumb and was apparently trying to get help.
CARLO (on camera): Authorities say it appears Brad stumbled out of his house, into the grass, and down the driveway, bleeding all the way. They say he then came over here to his neighbor's house, where they found a tremendous amount of blood on the driveway and at the door. And they believe it is there at the door where he collapsed and bled to death.
CARLO (voice-over): Investigators say Brad was discovered around 7:30 Thursday morning by a neighbor out for a walk. But there were few clues to just how he cut his thumb.
ANGELO BITSIS, CAPE CORAL POLICE: There were no witnesses. So we don't know precisely what happened.
CARLO: Witnesses say Brad's bathroom window was busted, and the top piece of the toilet covered in blood, was discovered outside. Ed says he believed that's where Brad cut himself.
COTTON: ... That there is quite a bit of violence within the bathroom itself.
CARLO: But when we asked Ed why he thought that.
COTTON: I don't know how he died. All I know that we woke up and he was dead in our front yard this morning.
CARLO: Many questions still surround this case, and police say they may never know what really happened.
In Cape Coral with photojournalist Greg Wagner, I'm Margaret Carlo, NBC 2 News.
