Kwazulu-Natal Religious Folk Promote Tourism

SHIHAB RATTANSI, CNN ANCHOR: Kwazulu-Natal is one of the smallest provinces in South Africa; it's known for its diverse landscape, from beaches to wilderness, to the sugar and bananas farms. Unfortunately, Kwazulu-Natal's physical beauty is marred by poverty. SABC reports on what a religious group is doing to promote tourism to the region.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KATHY HEARN, SABC CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Another authentic project on the go, is a church group. This is one of the oldest African churches in South Africa. It was headed by (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

It's Thursday and time for the prayer meeting. But it's after that when the dancing starts, that an appeal to many tourists with tapping feet. The hypnotic beat comes from this instrument, which uses up a lot of lung power.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We listen to the tone of the song, which shows us, how can you dance? However your move being like that. So, we follow the instructions of the song.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: In this area or this land, we feel proud about our customs and we are always trying to do our best in waking part of these.

HEARN: So what they are doing is making their traditions open to the public.

I am a member of (UNINTELLIGIBLE). So, whenever I'm busy working, I work with a community and their activities, according to their customs.

HEARN: What he does is write down and explain his customs. He says many of the old traditions are falling away, and will soon be lost, unless they are recorded. He also acts as a link between the women and foreign visitors, who want to be part in conversation, and will pay money to do so.
